Choosing new bed linen

The quality of the bed linen we have in our bedrooms is an integral feature that many of us overlook. For many that is because we simply don’t understand how the quality can increase sleep experience. However, once you get it right, bed linen can revolutionise your sleeping experience and there will be no going back. Below we’ve listed some tips and created a guide to help you choose what bed linen is the best for you.

Choose the correct material for you

There are a wide range of fabrics available for bed linen for us to choose from. Weigh out your options based on your priorities as well as how much you’re willing to spend. Some of the more well-known materials include:

  • Cotton:  This is material that is cool, absorbent and long lasting. Cotton bed linen is great for warmer countries and busy households. The best quality and most expensive type of fabric you can find is 100% Egyptian cotton. It provides for a very durable and soft bed linen that tends to improve with each subsequent wash and it is very long lasting. However, keep in mind that you can get both good and bad quality Egyptian cotton. Usually price is the differentiating matter.

  • Poly-blend: These are perfect for those who want fuss-free bed linen. It is cheaper, easy to use and resistant to wrinkles.

  • Linen: Although it is expensive, like cotton it is durable, soft and perfect for warmer climates. It will last you decades and also improves with each wash.

Understanding the thread count

It’s a term we’ve all seen but never fully understood. So what exactly is thread count? Thread count is the number of horizontal and vertical threads in one square inch of fabric. For example, 200 TC means that there are 200 horizontal and vertical threads in one square inch of fabric. It is often said that the better the quality of the fabric, the higher the thread count and generally this is the case. The higher the thread count, the smoother and softer the fabric is.  However, be weary of companies that cheat the number with a double twist yarn. If you want quality and don’t mind splashing out, stick to more expensive bed linen. Not only will it last longer, the thread count and quality of the fabric is generally better. If you’re on a budget, don’t worry, a bed linen with a lower thread count can be just as comfortable if selected carefully.

The fabric weave

How a fabric is woven can really impact not only the feel of your bed linen but also the look. Two of the most common weaves include percale and sateen. Percale is lightweight and tightly woven resulting in crisp and cool bedding that has a flat finish. Sateen on the other hand has a smoother feeling and has a beautiful sheen. There are so many other weaves available as well such as microfibre and flannel. Before you make a decision, do your research and take into consideration what you desire and how you want your bedroom to look and feel.

Seasonality

It is totally up to you to decide how many bed sheets you want. Having 2 sets is advisable as it provides a backup and also allows you to alternate between the two between washes. From season to season, if you wish, you can change up your bed linen to suit the season you’re in. Not only will you be more comfortable, but it will provide a beautiful visual aspect to match the outside world. However, having one bed linen is also not an issue and if styled correctly, or if a neutral bed linen is chosen, it can be perfect all year round. Adding a fleece or changing up the throw and other bedroom decorations can also help to style your bed linen to suit the season.

Right size for the bed

Finally, buy the right size bed linen for your mattress. If you are buying a fitted bed sheet, remember to check the measurements against your mattress measurements to see that it fits. Flat sheets usually offer enough material in case your mattress is slightly bigger, so if in doubt, stick to the flat sheets.

Last but not least, remember to take care of your bed linen. Buying the perfect bed linen won’t be revolutionary if it is mistreated. Treat it with care and wash it in accordance to the manufacturer’s recommendations. With a little bit of care, you’ll be able to truly reap the benefits of having the perfect bed linen.
