Small Bedroom? How to make best use of the space

Having a small bedroom can be frustrating at times. You sometimes feel like you can't fit yourself into the room, never mind a whole new piece of furniture. It almost seems like there's nothing you can do about the lack of space and you may feel hopeless thinking about how to use the space.

But low and behold, there are plenty of thrifty ways you can maximise space in your room. We’ve done most of the thinking outside the box (room) for you to help you to transform your small room into a Pinterest worthy bedroom without the hefty price tag using a couple of space efficiency tips.

Create the illusion of space.

Illusions are god sent masteries of the mind and eyes. By using this mastery gifted to humans, they can help to give a perceived impression of more space in your room. We’d suggest hanging curtains as close to the ceiling as possible and choosing curtains that blend in with the wall. Your eyes will be deceived into thinking you have a higher ceiling.

Ditch the clutter

This is a no brainer solution but one we need to be reminded of. Remove unnecessary items from view. Having a clean and clear space will always trick your mind into thinking that you have more space. This doesn't go to say you can't accessorise, but all those small pieces of unnecessary clutter scattered around can really take up space and make it seem like there is no space. Every square foot is precious in a small bedroom and clutter shouldn't be taking it up.

Let the light in

Light can be the difference between a claustrophobic feeling room and a spacious feeling room. We’re out here trying to achieve the latter. Have roller blinds or light curtains on your windows to allow lots of natural light to come in during the day. Have spot lights and decorative lights to add the ambience and brighten up the room on dark nights. These lighting tips will ensure there is some form of  light throughout the day in your room to brighten up your room and give the illusion of a spacier room.

Use the walls religiously

Your walls provide a lot of space, use these to their maximum potential to save space on the floor for more important things. Mount your lights on the wall rather than having standing lamps and instead of bedside tables opt for floating shelves. This will not only maximise the space you have, but will also create an optical illusion by drawing the eyes upwards and consequently making the room look taller.

Go mirror mad

Mirrors are the epitome of deception. They can instantly make a room look double its size by deceptively maximising the space. Particularly, using full length mirrors can help make your room look much bigger than it actually is. Alternatively, you can horizontally place a full length mirror above your bed or 2 on either side of your bed to achieve this look.

Buy multi use furniture

The biggest trick for space efficiency is buying multi use furniture. Multi use furniture can bring your dreams of having multiple furniture pieces to life. If you’re thinking of buying a desk, buy one with drawers so it can add some storage space as well as turn into a dresser. When buying a bed, buy one with drawers or an ottoman style bed so you can use your entire bed space for storage rather than clutter your room with boxes for extra storage space.  Buy smart, live smart.

Let’s hope you’re feeling inspired about transforming your box room. These ideas mean that you don't have to sacrifice your style nor bank balance to get that dreamy big room you always wanted.

Remember decluttered space = decluttered mind.
